An experiential learning initiative offered by the Toronto Renewable Energy Co-operative (TREC) and Toronto District School Board (TDSB)

The Green Collar Careers (GCC) program is a new initiative that addresses the labour needs of the emerging green energy industry by preparing today's youth for tomorrow's jobs. By bringing students and industry together through engaging and relevant secondary-school co-op placements focused on the green energy industry, the program will help develop a workforce that can fill new (and existing) jobs needed for a sustainable future. It will provide an opportunity for grade 11 and 12 students to better understand their role in the sustainable energy sector while gaining valuable job skills as well as exposure and access to the green energy job market.

Key elements of the project are:

  • Development of new co-op placements in Fall 2009 and Winter 2010 for TDSB students in the green energy sector, with a focus on energy efficiency / conservation and renewable energy
  • Outreach to “at-risk youth” to promote employment in the green energy sector
  • Supplementary Resources for students and teachers including career selection tools and materials, guest speakers and other experiential learning opportunities.
  • Development of a Green Energy Jobs Portal, an online employment resource and networking tool for students, teachers and employers
  • An annual Green Jobs Fair for secondary school students

The Green Collar Co-ops Initiative is supported by the Ontario Power Authority's Conservation Fund. The Conservation Fund provides support for new and innovative electricity conservation initiatives that build the ability of Ontario's residents, businesses, and institutions to reduce their demand for electricity. The results from these initiatives help to inform the development of new conservation programs.
