Kids' World of Energy in the Classroom

Our educators are available for hands-on, in-class workshops. These dynamic sessions consist of exciting demonstrations, interactive experiments and hands-on activities, using our unique models, supplies and technological tools. Workshops are linked to curriculum expectations and can provide a comprehensive introduction to the unit or can be used to reinforce lessons that have already been covered in the classroom.

Workshops are approximately 2.5 hours in length, and can be offered to a maximum of 2 classes at once (provide that adequate space is provided). Choose from either morning or afternoon time periods (school schedules can be accommodated). Discounts are offered to schools reserving more than one workshop / class per day (e.g. 2 morning classes per workshop or a morning and afternoon workshop).

Workshops can also be combined with a tour at the Exhibition Place - click here for more information.

“Thank you …for making our morning as worthwhile, engaging and fun as it was!  It gave our students a lot to talk about when they returned to the school this afternoon!"

"I must say a big thanks … for the splendid job you did yesterday. The students had a wonderful experience and we look forward to other similar experiences in the future."

Workshop Descriptions:

Grade 5 – Concentrate on Conservation
Science & Technology Strand: Earth & Space Systems – Conservation of Energy & Resources

The Grade 5 Energy Workshop focuses on the conservation of energy, and wind power as a form of renewable energy. Activities are based on grade 5 science curriculum expectations, and include constructing miniature wind turbines and measuring the amount of energy they can produce. Students test various blade constructions and learn about the importance of energy conservation as they attempt to power a high wattage versus a low-wattage light bulb. Energy conservation is further explored through interactive activities about conservation and global warming.

Grade 6 – Capture the Wind (NEW!)
Science & Technology Strand: Matter & Energy – Electricity and Electrical Devices

The Grade 6 Energy Workshop focuses on how electricity is produced, transformed and transmitted to our homes, with a case study on wind energy and how it works. Activities are based on the grade 6 science curriculum expectations, and include constructing and testing a miniature wind turbine, storing and reusing the electricity produced, and conducting experiments with series and parallel circuits.

Grade 7 – Too Hot to Handle!
Science & Technology Strand: Earth & Space Systems – Heat in the Environment

The Grade 7 Energy Workshop focuses on the human impact on the environment, and solar energy as a form of renewable energy. Activities are based on the grade 7 science curriculum expectations, and include constructing miniature solar photovoltaic panels and measuring the amount of energy they can produce. Students engage in a discussion about heat, radiation and greenhouse gases, and learn how to harness the sun’s energy through hands-on interaction with solar panels. Interactive activities about insulation allow students to build their own insulators and test their effectiveness.

Grade 9 – Plug into the Sun
Geography – Human-Environment Interactions

The Grade 9 Energy Workshop focuses on climate change, energy conservation, and the characteristics of electricity, with a focus on solar energy as a form of renewable energy. Students engage in a discussion about climate change, actions that they can take within their schools, and “green messaging” in the media. Activites include constructing miniature solar PV panels and powering various small appliances.
